Ninja-kun: Majou no Bouken  Jaleco (Tose)1985[i]Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken, Ninja Kid: Castle of Demons Adventure[/i]***Arcade port of the first game in the "Ninja-kun" series. You control a little ninja who has to defeat each enemy on screen. The game's formula is reminiscent of many other games of its time. You have very few stages packed with enemies. Once you have cleared all stages the game repeats itself just with more and deadlier enemies. Graphics are basic and the sound and music are annoying. It is a bit beyond me why this game started a successful series... labelimageminimize
Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu  Konami1986This is the first console game in the long-running Goemon series (only preceded by the arcade game [game=#3834]Mr. Goemon[/game], which gameplay-wise has not much to do with the Famicom version). You play the thief Goemon, some kind of Japanese Robin Hood, based on a real historical figure. In each stage you have to find three passes, which opens the gate to the next of the thirteen stages. Passes can be found in hidden underground passages, be bought in shops (amongst other useful extra items), or be found in first-person-view mazes. Money can be collected from slain enemies or hidden coin chests. Technically the game is very good and rather advanced for a mid-1986 title. I believe this was the very first 2Mbit cartridge and it shows with many different graphical environments. This game would eventually start a very successful game series, at least in Japan. However, the game does not yet feature the many hilarious characters and situations of the later Goemon games.***The Japanese title translates to something like 'Go Goemon! Tricking Adventure'. Karakuri means to trick or take a person by surprise (usually through mechanical means), but a karakuri ningyo (typically just called a karakuri) is also a type of Japanese puppet. The title may be a pun. Goemon is essentially the player's puppet during the game; however, the character of Goemon is also a thief (based on a real person), and thus his role in life is to trick people and steal things.

Milon's Secret Castle  Hudson Soft;Nintendo (Hudson Soft)1986
[100]***In "Milon's Secret Castle" you have to make your way up a castle to get rid of the evil that infests it and took the princess prisoner. Well, this game is not an ordinary platform game, mainly because about everything of importance is hidden. With your bubble attack you can not only shoot monsters, but also destroy blocks, many of them containing money but some of them also give access to hidden shops, hidden keys and doors and open up other parts of the game. Extra items from shops can and must be bought with the collected money. Combine this with a not particularly easy platform gaming part and it makes this a rather frustrating and difficult game. Also when hit by enemies you are not invulnerable for a second, often resulting in multiple hits at once. Today this would be considered bad game design. At the time of its release you could argue it added depth to the game and "Milon's Secret Castle" was in good company with other unfair NES games. If you take the frustrating part aside (e.g. playing with a walkthrough) it is a unique platformer with a puzzling maze-like level design.***1986-11 for Famicom ("Meikyuu Kumikyoku" is used in official documentation)
1988-09 for NES
2007-06 for Wii Virtual Console

Translation of the Japanese title is [i]The Maze Suite: Milon's Great Adventure[/i] or [i]The Labyrinth Suite: Milon's Great Adventure[/i] ("Suite" as in musical suite)

Dragon Ball: Shenron no Nazo  Bandai (Tose)1986

Dragon Ball: Le Secret Du Dragon NES-B8-FRA published in France PAL Region B by Bandai in 1988. UPC:0-45557-87310-3

The NES-B8-FRA and NES-B8-EEC version seem precisely the same game in different packaging (box, cart, and some chips on the circuit board of the cart are different). Despite the different chip manufacturers, the function and data in those chips are identical. Both versions have French text in the game and seem to show no variation in any detail.***This is the first Dragon Ball game for the Famicom/NES. It is an action game in an overhead perspective similar to [game=#155964]Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu[/game] or [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game]. Sometimes when entering special rooms the screen changes to a side-view perspective, mostly having you fight a boss or making your way through a little platform-style passage. The game is not as bad as its reputation has it. Surely it is really annoying that your power not only decreases by being hit from enemies, but also decreases automatically when just running around (like some sort of time limit), which makes the game pretty nasty. Bandai changed some elements for the US version, which was titled "Dragon Power". Some sprites and all of the character's names as well as some of the jokes were altered. The storyline stays similar (you are in search of the seven Dragon Balls), but features horrible dialog in the US version which most often makes no sense at all. On the other hand the game does feature extremely many dialog-scenes between the levels and even inside a level. At time of its release this might be the story-wise biggest non Adventure/RPG game for the Famicom/NES.***The U.S. release has pretty much nothing left of the Dragon Ball in it and is only a generic "Kung Fu" game. Dragon Ball came to the U.S. 10 years later and was only then recognized, partially explaining why the U.S. publisher would want to rape the game so.***The American version of the first Dragon Ball game in the world. As always, the Americans have censored a lot of things. Is the only DB translated and released in the USA.***The original Japanese title means 'Mystery of Shenron'. Shenron (a.k.a. Shen Long) is a mythological Chinese dragon spirit who features prominently in the anime series.

Castlequest  ASCII;Nexoft (ASCII;Bits Laboratory)1986A long time ago in a faraway land, there lived a lovely young princess named Margarita. Her beauty and grace were known throughout the land - especially to Mad Mizer, the Dark Lord of the grim Groken Castle high in the Forbidden Mountains. He had vowed to make the Princess his queen; and so, one terrible day, he sent his ghoulish helpers to capture her, and she was carried off and imprisoned in one of the hundred miserable rooms of Groken Castle. News of the kidnapping spread throughout the kingdom, and many courageous young men braved the perils of Groken Castle in an attempt to rescue the Princess - only to become hopelessly lost in the complicated maze of rooms, ensnared in one of the many treacherous traps, or foiled by Mad Mizer's deadly servants. Finally the news reached the worthy Prince Rafael, who had long loved the Princess from afar. Raising his sword to the heavens, Prince Rafael swore that nothing would keep him from her side, and set out on his Castlequest. The odds against him seemed hopeless... But legend has it that two magical fairies have been held captive in the Castle for centuries. If the Prince can find and release them to gain their help, he may yet succeed in his quest. And to rescue his fair Princess, he is prepared to face the deadly wrath of the Dark Lord himself!***This is a different game from [game=#i196277]Castle Quest[/game]***In this platform/puzzle mix you control a brave knight trying to rescue a princess which is trapped inside a huge castle. The way to the princess however is blocked by doors. Many doors. So your main objective is to collect keys with the appropriate colors to make progress. Although you start with 50 lives (at least in the US version) the game is not easy. Pixel-perfect jumping is needed and there is the constant threat that you run out of keys and trap yourself. This is also my main complaint about this game, cause it tends to become confusing and frustrating. And your only attack (with a knife) has a much too short range. As with many early ASCII Famicom/NES games this game originated on MSX homecomputers. The rooms of the castle are bigger though in the NES version (the MSX games featured only one-screen rooms). Graphics and sound get their job done but are far from being great. labelimagesubject

[52]***After the initial 1986 Famicom Disk System release in Japan, this game made it to the USA in May 1987 as cartridge version for the first time. The Japanese got their cartridge version on the 5th February 1993. Except the removal of saved games this version seems to be identical to the Famicom Disk Version. Castlevania is an early Konami NES title with great and varied background graphics and sprites. Music is also very good and memorable. Konami really understood early on how to program high quality games for that console. Playability is also quite good but there are a few issues. Most prominent one the fact that when you are hit by a monster you are pushed back quite a bit, which very often results in falling down platforms and to your death.***Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on Earth. You've arrived at Castlevania, and you're here on business: to destroy the curse of the Evil Count, once and for all. Make your way through six monstrous floors filled with bats, ghosts, zombies and every kind of ghoulish creature you can imagine. Use the legendary whip Vampire Killer and a host of deadly weapons to battle your way to Dracula's chamber and the ultimate duel of good vs. evil.***The original Castlevania in all it's 8-bit glory. This game has great music and interesting levels (as far as the NES goes, anyway). Simply a classic.

Woody Poko  dB-SOFT1987"Woody Poko" originated on Japanese homecomputers as are many of db-Softs Famicom games. It is a platform game, including several typical action-adventure elements like item shops and non-linear levels. The game itself is nice, but a bit confusing. One of those games that I will surely play again as soon as there is a good walkthrough or at least a map available. labelimageminimize
Chester Field: Ankoku Shin e no Chousen  Vic Tokai1987"Chester Field" is a platform/action game with combat similar to [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] mixed with typical RPG elements like leveling up, shops to buy better weapons and armor and a few spells. The game features eight levels with an overworld/castle and a complex maze, mostly containing an important object, which is needed for further progress. The game could have been good if the locations wouldn't be so confusing (much is hidden behind destroyable blocks, there are one-way doors etc.) and if the controls were better. labelimageminimize
Majou Densetsu II: Daimashikyou Galious  Konami1987"Majou Densetsu II" is the NES port of the second game in the Knightmare series which was quite popular on Japanese homecomputers and the only one which was ported to the Nintendo console. The story is the same as ever. You, entering a monster-infested castle, trying to save the kingdom by defeating the evil Galious. The special thing is that you can switch between two characters (a male and female one) at any time. Each of them has some special abilities which makes switching between them necessary at certain points. Killing monsters will eventually increase you life bar, you can collect coins to buy and upgrade weapons and items, which gives the game an Action-RPG touch. The typical Konami quality is all there with good controls and audiovisuals (although not quite as good as in some earlier games). However I must say that I was a bit disappointed because at this time in the lifetime of the NES, Konami was the one company that didn't rely on overly complicated, nearly unfair level layouts and tons of not non-apparent secrets. But sadly "Majou Densetsu II" features all that. Without a map or very strong nerves you won't stand much of a chance. labelimageminimize
Valis: The Fantastic Soldier  Tokuma Shoten (Telenet Japan)1987The Valis series originates from Japanese homecomputers. You play a girl with a shooting sword running around on a quest to save the world. After the first city level the game opens up in another world where it becomes more non-linear. You must find items in several areas to progress through another one etc. The home computer version were more linear in this regard. While everything looks and sounds pretty decent for a 1987 Famicom game, Valis has a major flaw. It's the difficulty level. The levels have a very complicated and annoying layout. There are maps in the game, but you have to find them first. And the monsters kill you fast. After playing lots of insanely difficult Famicom game of around that time I get the definite impression that companies expected their customers to buy hint books. Today in the world of emulators and save states you can circumvent much of the frustration, but back then it must have been extremely frustrating to play. labelimageminimize
Haja no Fuuin  ASCII1987Haja no Fuuin debuted on Japanese homecomputers and is better known as "Miracle Warriors" in the west due to its "Sega Master System" port. And I suggest that you rather check out the Master System version, not only because it is in English, but it is also a better, improved. The Famicom/NES version resembles much more the original computer versions with weaker graphics and sound and even harsher difficulty level than the already not easy Master System version. labelimageminimize
Wizards & Warriors  Acclaim (Rare)1987

[1]***The first game in Rare's "Wizards & Warriors" series, and the only one which made it to Japan as well. Technically well done with decent controls. The story is from the typical "heroic knight saves the princess from an evil wizard" type. In order to finish a level you have to collect a certain amount of gems. You also have to collect colored keys to open corresponding doors and chests. At the end of a level a boss fight awaits the hero. The levels are varied enough to have kept me interested and everything looks interesting. All in all not the super best game ever, but quite enjoyable.***

Ripple Island  Sunsoft (Tokai Engineering)1988In a country where humans and animals live peacefully together, an evil being kidnaps the princess. Your task is of course to rescue the princess. The game is divided into areas. Each area (consisting of about 20 screens) has to be played through in order. In contrast to most other early console adventures, the game uses icons instead of a verb list. It is also centered more about finding objects inside the screen, which is the main problem with objects sometimes not very easily recognisable to be able to interact with. Graphics are very cute and fitting for the fairy tale scenario. Language is in Japanese only with no translation patch available yet. All in all a decent and a bit "different" adventure game for the Famicom.***Developers were self-compelled to amp up the animation and graphics of this game due to the talent of a new artist at Sunsoft that was creating the cover art for the boxes and labels of several of their games. labelimageminimize
Donald Land  Data East1988"Donald Land" wasn't the only game based on the McDonalds brand, but it was the first one for a videogame console and only released in Japan. It is a straightforward platform game. I kinda liked it more than I first expected that I would. Controls are ok, difficulty level just right and the levels are varied enough. Gameplay-wise the only thing I did not like was the attack method with bombs. You can't shoot forward in this game, but only throw bombs in a certain angle. Quite often its hard to aim correctly to hit enemies. I also really dislike the Ronald McDonald character, which you control as the hero. That guy is creepy and ugly. But doesn't change the overall good impression the game left with me.***[media=youtube]u_VILmI6kT8[/media] labelimageminimize
Demon Sword  Taito (Tose)1988Note that the protagonists is neither a ninja or a samurai, that's not a ninjatō he's wielding, but those are deadly shuriken he's throwing.

The save password system is accessible from the start menu by pressing up. This is not exactly a secret because it is described extensively in the manual. The plot of this game revolves around searching for pieces the demon sword refereed to in the title. The protagonist can cast magical like spells. Certain elements of the game suggest it is of the wuxia genre.

The Japanese and USA releases are different. The Japanese version has 6 more stages, more bosses, more items and spells, more cut scenes and more text.

This world of the distant future has once again flourished under the guidance of the Great King, who harnessed the power of the 8 Eyes to rebuild the planet. These strange jewels of power were formed at the eyes, or center, of the eight nuclear explosions which nearly destroyed the Earth. In the wrong hands, the 8 Eyes could cause untold destruction... And now, they have been seized by the Great King's eight Dukes, in a desperate bid to gain control of the world for themselves. They have banished the King to the nuclear wastelands, and already their squabbling threatens to plunge the world into war once again! SQF-FY ファイナルファンタジーII/Final Fantasy II published 1988-12-17 by Square in Japan.
Final Fantasy II: Dark Shadow Over Palakia was going to be the title of the USA publishing.
MSRP: 6,500円

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

This is the Final Fantasy volume that introduced Chocobos and Cid

[Zerothis]***Sequel of the successful Final Fantasy. It has a really good storyline and a new system where you have to improve abilities/skills by using them, instead of gaining XP and levels in the traditional way. Still a good RPG, but I really didn't like the way the skill system seduced you to find ways to make leveling up easier by e.g. hitting your own party members. It somehow ruined the whole pace of the game.

Mystery Quest Taxan (Carry Lab)1989"Mystery Quest" is the NES version of the Japanese [game=#183234]Hao Kun no Fushigi na Tabi[/game] for the Famicom Disk System. I don't like this platform game very much. The controls are ok, but the graphics and music are not really good and the game is rather monotonous. You have to retrieve several objects from four castles. The castles itself are maze-like platform levels with doors, mini-bosses which drop keys, breakable blocks etc. Between the castles are linear outdoor levels. The game has only a couple of standard enemies which repeat and repeat (except the mini-bosses, which at least change in each castle). The cartridge version has become a bit easier and they changed the music a little. However, considering this game was released about two years after the original Japanese FDS version it is absolutely not understandable why they left out the fifth and sixth castle as well as the last outdoor zone (cutting the game for about 1/3). That helps to make a disappointing game even worse. labelimageminimize
Castle of Deceit Bunch Games1990Phlax, mystic being, wielder of the Emerald Magic, consented to offer his life to protect the stones of Rune. For centuries he dwelled within the plasma of energies of the stones where the Runes were hidden. Until at last it drove him insane. Such was the power of the stone that even the bitter hallucinations of his madness were given life. Six deadly beings appeared, stealing the Rune Stones. You, Eebo, the most promising of the young Magicians of Dace, must enter the castle, exploring the realities. But do not trust your senses - what you see, what you what you hear may all be a lie! labelimagesubject

Dragon's Lair  Sony Imagesoft;Elite;Epic Sony Records (MotiveTime)1990The NES version came first and the European and Japanese releases came later. There is uncompiled assembly code in the ROM. It doesn't do anything, it is just recorded in the unused space in the ROM. Accidentally included to be sure. The source code reveals that a PDS development system was used (software and peripheral for x86 MS-DOS). European and Japanese releases are significantly different and use an MMC3 chip and character ROM rather than UNROM which used a RAM chip that was populated by code in the program ROM. The MMC3 version runs much, much faster.***
[70]***From deep within Mordroc's castle, a foul stench rose up to mix with the cold, damp midnight air; the telltale sign of the evil wizard's pet fire-breathing dragon, Singe; the reeking breath of the beast that guarded the Princess Daphne in the dark and deadly caves far below the surface. Dirk the Daring walked steadily toward the castle gate. He felt no fear. Fear was for cowards, not the most courageous knight in the land. No other would dare enter this perilous castle where Mordroc had imprisoned the helpless princess. But then, no other could match Dirk's unrelenting love for the beautiful Princess Daphne. There was no other possible course of action. Now was the time for heroes. Now was the time to enter the Dragon's Lair!***

The Magic Candle  Sammy Studios;American Sammy (Japan Soft Technology)1992This game is like Ultima IV in many ways. For instance, there is no personified villain in the game; just an epic task that will save the world from a potential evil. But it has features that make it unique as well. The players party can be split into 2 or more groups whenever desired. Thus two tasks could be accomplished at once. For instance, half the party could get jobs in a town to earn money while the other half quested. Also NPC in the game had their own property and it was not available to the player's party. You had to get to know people before they would allow you into their home. Characters would suffer from Hunger and Fatigue if not feed and rested. Weapons would wear out and break if not properly maintained. And time passing plays an important roll in several aspects of the game.

The USA version was announced to be published by American Sammy but it never was. Enjoy the Japanese version if you can find one to buy and can read Japanese. Otherwise play one of the computer versions.

Last Action Hero  Sony Imagesoft;Playtronic (Bits Studios)1993NES-LA-USA

Even though the hero in the movie this game is based on shot at bad guys and their cars, Columbia Pictures decided that Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't gonna do that any more so the game had to be different from the movie. The programmers retaliated by allowing pedestrians to be killed in vehicular collisions and their blood splattered all over. Columbia Pictures did not object.

The catalog number for the Brazilian/South American version published by Playtronic is probably NES-LA-BZL but this has not been confirmed.
